Chapter Thirteen

Possum’s usual knock—two raps followed by three more—on the door announced his arrival. Jules opened the door for him. He had three small airplane-sized whiskey bottles in one hand and a glass of ice in the other.

“Sit down, buddy. I have to show you something.”

Rick pulled up two chairs by the desk, and poured himself and Jules both whiskeys as Possum did the same. He clinked his glass with Possum’s, but it wasn’t a usual ha-ha clink-clink this time.

“Possum, we’ve been through a lot together over the years, and what I’m about to show you may be very painful.”

Possum frowned and took a sip of his drink. Rick pulled open the drawer on the desk, revealing the book. Possum looked down at it. It didn’t register at first. Rick pulled out the receipt he had stuck between a couple of pages and showed it to Possum. He passed Possum his readers and flashlight. Possum focused on the receipt and then dropped the flashlight in shock.

“Where did you get this?”

“Jules snatched it from the hangar when Evan and his crew must’ve left to track us to that cave. I think they tracked us for a couple of miles. They must’ve known the general area, because that’s where they hid the jewel, but with all the clear cutting and rain, without the map that we had, they never would’ve found it. They just needed us to find it for them.”

“Are you saying Evan owned this book?”

Jules interrupted. “Yes, Possum. I saw Evan pull this book out of his personal briefcase. He was in charge and it was his book. When they left, he accidentally left it behind sitting on the wheel of a Cessna in the hangar. I grabbed it and hid it in case they came back. When you saved us, I grabbed my backpack with the book in it I had hidden inside a couple of piled up tires. I had no idea it once belonged to your wife. I didn’t even know her name was Jennifer until Rick told me what happened. I’m so sorry.”

Jules reached over and cupped her hand over Possum’s to comfort him.

Tears were welling up in Possum’s eyes, and his look went from sadness to anger.

“I’m gonna kill that fucker myself, Rick. I’m going with you.”

“Look, Possum, you’re not a murderer. And I mean, we don’t even know for sure if he did it or if he just bought this book on the black market from the perp who did do it.”

“We need to find out. Let’s get the jewel back to the Yanomami and save the Kayapó. Once we have it back, I’ll deal with Evan personally. I have to know the truth.” He clenched his hands into fists, setting his jaw hard. “I have to avenge Jen’s death. She was my everything.”

“I know, buddy,” said Rick, barely able to get the words out. “I’ll let you decide Evan’s fate if he was indeed the killer. I won’t stand in your way. That I promise.
